The Lovely Bones revisited
Has anyone read this book a few years ago? It's available on Shopee. I read the book, "The Lovely Bones" many yrs ago. Much later, I noticed a younger colleague carrying the book, and by that time the movie had come out already. The story had such emotional weight. It's about the unspeakable tragedy of a young girl becoming part of a string of fatalities in the hands of a kidnapper-killer (mirroring real-life events in the US back in early 2000). The book starts with the simple statement, "My name was Salmon, like the fish." Mark Wahlberg stars as the father of the victim Susie Salmon (played by Saoirse Ronan), murdered after being unwittingly lured by her neighbor George (played by "The Devil Wears Prada" actor Stanley Tucci) Susie is shown in both the book & movie stuck between realms where she can watch over her family and community, but while her family members do their best to find evidence, there's a lot of emotions -- sadness, anger, and so on, coming to the surface. The book & film invited deeper insights on grief and the afterlife. "The Lovely Bones," along with another masterpiece that also had a film adaptation, "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas" -- were 2 of the most stirring (little did I expect that their movie versions would make me gasp) books I've ever read.
