Proverbs 3:5–6
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Trust in the Lord with all your heart means trusting God completely, with one’s whole heart. In the Bible, the heart usually refers to the inner self, which includes a person’s emotions, motivations, thinking, and attitude. Do not lean on your own understanding means that one cannot depend on one’s own imperfect reasoning. If one relies solely on oneself or lets feelings alone determine one’s course, one might make choices that initially appear good but ultimately bring bad results. In all your ways acknowledge him means getting God’s viewpoint in every significant aspect of one’s life and in every important decision one makes. One does this by praying to God for guidance and by following what God says in his Word, the Bible. He will make your paths straight means that God makes one’s path straight by helping one to live by his righteous standards. Thus, one avoids needless pitfalls and enjoys a much happier life.
