Rules you go by to be safe when traveling/commuting

Hello. I just realized na as a super sheltered child even to gradschool, I never really learned on how to ensure my safety and protect myself especially when commuting or traveling. Di rin kasi talaga ako gumagala before as a student. With that, to ensure you are safe when traveling/commuting alone, what important rules do you go by? I was just told by a friend that it's not safe to walk alone pag lubog na ang araw. Pero I usually walk alone going home even if 9PM na 😅 I feel like my sense of danger is not well developed 😅
