My Morena Skin, My Story
It’s crazy how beauty standards can make you believe that something natural about you needs to be “fixed.” For the longest time, society painted “beautiful” as fair, smooth, and spotless. It’s in the commercials, the whitening ads, even in casual comments like “ang itim mo na” after a beach trip. Slowly, many of us learned to hide from the sun instead of basking in it. I used to be one of those people. I’d bring umbrellas under clear skies, stay away from the ocean at noon, and constantly search for ways to make my skin lighter. It wasn’t because I didn’t like the sun, I actually loved it, but because I thought my natural color wasn’t enough. But something changed when I started going to the beach again, letting the waves pull me in and the sunlight touch my skin. Every trip left me a few shades darker, and instead of feeling shame, I felt alive. The ocean became my safe place, a reminder that my skin tells stories of freedom, warmth, and the joy of just being. Now, I see beauty differently. Morena isn’t “before and after.” It’s not something to correct. It’s heritage, strength, and identity. And honestly, the sun doesn’t take away our beauty. It brings it out, one golden shade at a time. #Morena #WomenEmpowerment #BeautyStandard
