On Learning to Negotiate Rates as a Creator
Putting a price on creativity has always felt strange to me. It’s personal and fluid, yet in brand deals it often gets reduced to numbers and metrics. That tension makes negotiation feel heavier than it looks on the surface. I turned down a project recently, even after trying to make the terms fair. The back-and-forth wasn’t easy—I doubted myself a lot, and waiting for their reply felt endless. What made it harder was knowing the risk: they could walk away, and there’s never a guarantee of a “next one.” Still, I chose to walk away first. What I’m slowly learning is that saying no, or even just asking for more, is its own quiet act of courage. It doesn’t erase the fear or the risk, but it helps me practice naming my value in a world that would rather I didn’t. #creator #rates #tips #business #negotiation
