My Work Relationship: Officemates Turned Friends

In my previous jobs, I used to treat my officemates as mere officemates. I clocked in at 9, did my work as I was expected to, then clocked out at 6. I never bonded with my workmates outside (or even inside) the office. This is until I transferred to my current work now, as a Marketing Manager. Now that I’m managing people, I recognize the need to know them not just on a professional level, but more so on a personal level. It helps me understand why they do things a certain way, and I get to know their strengths and weaknesses. These are very vital in meeting departmental objectives. But along the way, little do we know, friendships start to develop. I start to care about my people. We have weekly huddles, monthly hang-outs, and sometimes they even go to my house and have a sleepover. Looking back, I realize how much has changed in the way I view work. I’ve told myself, “These aren’t just workmates anymore. These are friends. This is family.” #officemates #friends #work
